SongBird North - Where Writers Sing and Tell (Formerly "Bluebird North")
For the first show of SongBird Norths 23rd season, host/producer Shari Ulrich welcomes Warren Murfitt & Kate Main (Murrfitt & Main), Dave Wilson (Winter Wilson) and a third writer TBA to the Roundhouse stage. Vancouver's longest-running songwriters-in-the-round showcase always offers a unique live music experience: an eclectic, inspiring evening of engaging songs, stories and humour and a warm, informal vibe. Audiences are guaranteed to discover artists that are new to them, and experience familiar ones in a refreshing new context.

SongBird North: Where Writers Sing and Tell is produced by Shari Ulrich for the Songwriters Association of Canada. The SAC gratefully acknowledges the support of the SOCAN Foundation. For more information on the SACs mandate, activities and membership programs, please visit

BACKGROUND: Since 1995, SongBird North (formerly Bluebird North) has been a mainstay in Vancouver for songwriters from across the continent, as a bi-monthly showcase that features four talented singer/songwriters of widely varying styles, on stage together, taking turns playing their own original songs and sharing stories with one another and the audience about their work. The series has toured nationally, and has established itself in several other Canadian cities. Vancouver remains its longest-standing host city.

Primarily known as an instrumentalist, Alberta born DOUG COXs compositions and songs have also played a central role in his musical journey. His songs and music have been featured on numerous film and TV soundtracks, including Terry Gilliam's feature film, Tideland, A&E's Biography, Coyote Ugly, Steven Seagals: Lawman, Auction Kings, Breaking Amish, Call of the Wildman, Chasing Classic Cars, Anothony Bourdain's No Reservations and TV's Duck Dynasty.
Doug has earned innumerable raves, from the BBCs whispering Bob Harris to magazines such as Guitar Player, he has long been an in-demand session player.
In 2017, Doug was inducted into the BC Music Hall of Fame as a Pioneer Star for his extensive body of work as a writer-musician and producer. In 2019, he was awarded a place on the Comox Valley Walk of Fame and guested on the Grammy Nominated album by Los Texmaniacs, Cruzando Borders.
He currently co-writes on Wednesdays when home, via skype, with his musical buddy Linda McRae from Nashville.

Vancouvers REID JAMIESON is a vocal powerhouse committed to making music that moves us, known for his regular appearances on CBCs Vinyl Cafe with Stuart McLean. A classic introvert/extrovert combo, Reid now performs with his saucy wife and long-time song-writing partner CAROLYN MILL. Along with winning the John Lennon Songwriting Contest for their first co-write RAIL, this creative couple wrote their way into the Vancouver Folk Music Festival by winning 1st prize in the Pickin a Folk Star Contest.
Their catalog and repertoire have a wide ranging appeal with compelling originals plus unique interpretations of the work of Leonard Cohen, Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison and more.
Reid and Carolyn have just released a new album, with all but one song co-written by this husband & wife creative team. Titled Me Daza, it was recorded in Schull, Co. Cork Ireland with producer Kieran Kennedy. Mature themes range from loving a woman during and after The Change, to Irelands abortion referendum, to coping with mental illness and social media.

RYAN McMAHON, born and raised in Chemainus, BC, has carved out an almost 20-year career as an independent artist in Canada.  Hes always been a genre fence sitter, hanging out on the edges of country just enough to say he isnt. Ryan sings to anyone and everyone who has ever got drunk, smoked, cried, loved or been loved, says producer Andre Wahl (Hawksley Workman, Luke Doucet).  Over the course of his career, Ryan has toured Canada countless times, released five full-length albums, and seen his music licensed nationally and abroad. 2012 marked winning 3 out of 5 nominations at the Vancouver Island Music Awards and co-founding Lion Bear Fox, with song-writing colleagues Cory Woodward & Christopher Arruda. The band was named as one of the Top 20 Finalists for the 2013 Peak Performance Project in Vancouver.
In 2014, Showtimes original series, Californication featured the single Ill Be Damned. On Feb 1st 2019, Ryan released In Line For a Smile, I think that when I look back on a lifetime in music, this album will stand out as a high water mark for me.  Im extremely proud of it, and I cant wait for it to reach not only my small fan base, but new ears as well.

SHARI ULRICH (Host / Producer)
Shari's 45-year career  from Pied Pumkin through The Hometown Band and on as a solo artist and multi-instrumentalist  has led to 25 albums, including collaborations with Bill Henderson and Roy Forbes (UHF), Barney Bentall & Tom Taylor (BTU), and the bluegrass band The High Bar Gang. Her work has garnered several Juno Award nominations and two wins, induction into the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame, a 2014 Canadian Folk Music Award for English Songwriter of the Year, and the most fun making music a girl could ask for. Her passion for songwriters sharing a stage has led her to produce the Bluebird North and SongBird North series for the SAC for over 23 years, both locally and nationally. Her June solo release of Back To Shore on Borealis Reocrds has been added to folk charts throughout North America Records to great reviews.
